Cognitive skills are the essential mental abilities your brain relies on to think, read, learn, remember, reason, and stay focused. Together, these skills help you take in information, make sense of it, and store it so you can use it in everyday situations. Read more and watch a brief video here.
Families often describe an “Aha!” moment when they see their child’s test results and discuss the relevant details from our cognitive assessment process. Identifying weak skills explains why learning and daily struggles exist. Once identified, these weak areas can be targeted and strengthened using our unique cognitive skills programs. This helps remove frustrating obstacles to learning, saves time and money on ineffective interventions, and empowers families with answers. A cognitive skills assessment provides the roadmap for lasting academic success.
Tutoring re-teaches information that wasn’t grasped the first time around. Before investing in tutoring, a parent should ask, “Why didn’t my child grasp this the first time it was taught?” Unless the answer is obvious (such as missing school for an extended period of time), tutoring may not be the answer.
Multiple studies show that in 8 out of 10 cases, learning struggles are caused by weak cognitive skills -- not because information needs to be re-taught. If one or more weak cognitive skills are causing a child or an adult's learning struggles, tutoring attempts to accommodate that weakness, rather than correct it.
Brain training is a radically different approach. Our cognitive assessment process and brain training are the answers to a different question. When a student is struggling, we ask “How strong is his or her ability to learn?” We don’t accommodate weak skills, we strengthen them. The result? Faster, easier learning from now on.

Other interventions such as tutoring and remedial reading work at the academic level, while sensory therapies (vision, occupational, auditory, physical) target only sensory and motor skills. The cognitive skills training we provide, however, strengthens the Critical Thinking Skills foundation that underlies ALL learning. By developing and fine-tuning attention, processing speed, memory, and reasoning, our brain training methods make school-based learning and other therapies more effective. We don’t teach academic content; we make learning faster, easier, and less frustrating.
Our students need to be able to communicate and interact with us in order for our brain training methods to have the intended effects. While we can adapt and modify most of our program to assist in improving even moderate communication difficulties, we cannot help in circumstances where there is zero ability of the student to verbally communicate. Similarly, we cannot deliver our program as currently built to students who are entirely blind. Lastly, if the student is completely paralyzed and unable to communicate with language, we have a limited ability to be of much assistance and would defer to experts who are focused on helping this population achieve their goals. Much of our work involves a kinaesthetic component and requires direct interaction from the student that is rigorous, intense, and repetitive. With all of that said, we have definitely interacted with those who experience dyspraxia and moderate communication/ speech and language issues and we've even had fantastic results and successes with these students. Our goal is always to help. If we can, we do. We think it's more helpful to share when that isn't likely to be us. Because we use a case-by-case basis to assess each student, we can usually identify where other interventions might be much more appropriate or efficacious. When we encounter these scenarios, we try our best to point prospective students to the supports best suited to their needs - even in the rare case that it's not us.
Twice exceptional is also sometimes referred to as "2e" in the academic community. Read all about it and how Thinkable can help these unique students make the most of their gifts while overcoming any learning challenges they might also be experiencing here on our page dedicated to the topic.
YES! We have worked with a number of professionals, executives, and even whole work teams. Our brain training programs have assisted a number of adults with career building, promotions, and improvements in their work. We've also had adult customers who have worked with us to improve emotional regulation, reduce risk-associated behavioural issues, and to improve their work and family relationships associated with decision-making challenges. Sometimes adults missed the process of assessment in childhood and have obvious cognitive issues that they have coped with and adapted around. Today, assessments are often given as early interventions for the same struggles. We have seen a lot of men and women come to us with late-diagnosed neurodiversity. Some need additional coping tools. Some are hyper-aware of their deficits. Some are just trying to offset the aging process and improve their memory. Whatever the inspiration, we have program offerings that can help and we have experience helping adults all the way into the advanced elderly years.

Many students struggle in reading as a result of cognitive weaknesses. For example, a student who has weak auditory processing skills, cannot concentrate, works too slowly, has poor memory skills or struggles to create good mental images will struggle with reading. By addressing these weaknesses, students are given the skills they need to become successful readers.
We also have specialized reading programs that target coding the entire language from sound to phoneme to word to sentence to comprehension and critical thinking. If you have failed to find a reading intervention that works -- our programs and methods have incredible success for native English speakers as well as those learning English as a Second Language.
Yes! Parents often see noticeable improvements in as little as a few weeks. Because we target the root cause of learning challenges, the changes are not only big and impactful but also long-lasting. Many families report improvements in reading, math, focus, and confidence skills that transfer to school, home, and life. The secondary effect is that most (if not all!) of our students experience real and permanent increases in their intelligence. Our assessment provides a detailed basis for that - both in the pre-program assessment phase and in a final results session after a post-program assessment to determine the measurable outcomes of the program.
